January is done. What? Where did the month go? I hope everyone is off to a good start to the New Year, including any health improvement changes you may be making. In the newsletter this week: GVWC kicks off it community outreach projects; Healthful Hint Corner; and a new list of superfoods.
Shown below is our gathering for breakfast at Valter’s on Saturday. Great food and great time. Valter and his staff are always welcoming and the food is tremendous!
GVWC 2017 Community Outreach Projects
As you know, one of the tenets of the GVWC is to support our community. This year we’re stepping up our community outreach efforts and tossing out a challenge to the group. We recently formed a Community Outreach Committee, being chaired by Frank Stoy. Also serving on the committee is Chris Coenen and me. We’re planning a few community outreach projects during the year. We’ve also decided that, for every GVWC volunteer-hour, the Club will donate one dollar—up to $250—to a charity to be determined. We could use 2 or 3 other committee members to help us with planning and implementation. If you’d like to join us, email Frank.
Recently, the Community Outreach Committee met with the Church For All People’s Pastor Greg Henneman at the Reeb Avenue Center. Pastor Greg hosted us for one of the Tuesday Night Community Dinner and the Committee decided our first project this year will be to support the Tuesday Night Community Dinner on March 7. The dinners, which are provided by the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, are served at Southside Roots: Café.Market.Kitchen.
GVWC members, Gina Harmon and her son, Wayne, have volunteered at the Reeb. Gina was so excited when she found out that the GVWC would be involved:
This is where Wayne and I volunteered prior to and after the grand opening Sept 2015. We saw firsthand how amazing the market and the Roots Cafe are and the incredible services they provide to the immediate community. I guarantee anyone who can volunteer their time will be inspired and impressed!
On March 7, we need 10 volunteers. We have committed to a second Tuesday Night Dinner on May 23. We need 14 volunteers that night, which will essentially will be GVWC night serving the community. The time commitment each night is 4:30pm to 8:00pm. A summary of volunteer duties is below:
- Serving guests their dinner and beverages in a friendly manner to create a welcoming environment.
- Engaging with community members to ensure an overall gratifying experience.
- Minor cleaning duties; Cleaning tables, sweeping floors, etc.
- Assisting the kitchen team with cleaning and closing the kitchen including washing dishes, mopping floors, etc.
Please reserve your place as one of the 10 volunteers on March 7 by emailing Frank. You are welcome to bring a significant other or friend. Thanks!
Healthful Hints Corner
Our Healthful Hint of the week comes from Neal Eiber:
I’ve been using organic apple cider vinegar and local unprocessed honey for 10 years now, and can vow for its medicinal properties. I take a tablespoon of the vinegar in 6 oz of water, and a teaspoon of the honey each morning. You can use your own way to consume the duo. Its benefits include treating arthritis, indigestion, obesity, eczema, acid reflux, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. It is alkaline producing for all you clean eating folks. However, it does not work for anyone foolish to break their leg while carrying a fern down the steps!
Everyone, keep emailing me your healthful tips. Thanks to everyone who has already contributed. We will publish yours soon.
There are many health and wellness articles that provide lists of superfoods. It’s always fun to compare how many we consume on a regular basis. Here is an article of the list of 10 Superfoods from VeryWell blog. The list is comprised of foods that are high in antioxidants, help inflammation, and provide fiber to our diet. Cinnamon, a “healing spice,” also made the list.
