GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 28, 2017

Greetings!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  It was great walking weather during the holiday. This Saturday will be the first Saturday of December, and as you know, we will end our walk at the downtown Winans.

Stuff in the newsletter this week:

  • Major Change to GVWC Holiday Party – Now at Second Sole Gahanna Store
  • Tips to Improve Your Memory
  • 10 Habits of Incredibly Happy People
  • Gift Ideas from Winans – And They Deliver!

Here is a picture from Thanksgiving Day of a rafter of turkeys!  Yes, a rafter – Google it.

Major Change to GVWC Holiday Party!

Due to circumstances outside our control, the GVWC Holiday Party has been changed to the Gahanna Second Sole store, not the one in the Short North.  The address is 1245 N Hamilton Rd, Gahanna.  Because of the change of venue, there will be no after party at Sheryl’s place in the Short North.  Everything else stays the same.

Our annual holiday celebration for GVWC members—and plus 1—will be held 6:15pm on Saturday, December 16. As in the past, there will be appetizers, raffles, and 30% discounts off all Second Sole clothing and shoes. Please RSVP to me by December 3 (THIS SUNDAY).

P.S. If you’re not yet a member, this is a good time to make it official so you can take advantage of this terrific member benefit. Check out more benefits at the GVWC website.

Tips to Improve Your Memory

I don’t know about you, but I don’t seem to be remembering things like I used to.  It is good to hear that I am not alone in feeling that way.  Here is an article from the VeryWell blog with 6 tips for helping to improve your memory.  Tip number 6 works well for me – writing it down. Andrea gives me grief for still using a DayTimer (Google it), but that helps me remember things better by writing down notes, writing down daily, weekly, and monthly appointments – and being able to see it right in front of me.  The extra tip the article gives is for people to be more intentional about receiving information into our brains. I think that means MONOtasking versus multitasking.  For me, by multitasking, it seems that I am not paying attention to anything!

Ok, do you remember the new location for the GVWC Holiday Party?

10 Habits of Incredibly Happy People

You think happy people are naturally born that way? Think again.  They create healthy habits that help them be positive and happy, such as surrounding yourself with the right people, helping others, practicing gratitude, slowing down, and yes, exercising!  Here is a great article from Forbes with the Top 10.

Gift Ideas from Winans – And They Delivery!

Winans Delivers! Did you know we can ship our freshly made chocolates and locally roasted coffee anywhere? Whether you need to send a box of chocolates, a selection of flavored coffees or even a gift basket filled to the brim with chocolates, coffees, teas, nuts, chocolate covered pretzels and other treats – we can help! We can work with you to create a custom treat your family and friends will love!  Contact Monica  for all of your Holiday gift giving this season!

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 21, 2017

Greetings!

As long as the weather cooperates, we will walk again as a group on Saturday. Unfortunately, late last week, the forecast looked bad. For safety reasons, we do not walk when there is risk of lightening, when there is risk of icy conditions, or when other dangerous conditions are present. We will always err on the side of caution. So it was Friday night when I decided to cancel—to give people fair warning that we would not meet in the morning. As it turned out, the nastiness held off. I, for one, was able to get out for 5 miles. I hope you got a workout in, too.

(Also, I’m not sure why it happens, but the last couple email cancellations I have sent have been delayed. Indeed, Google assures me that it will keep trying to send it—for 48 hours! OK, it’s a time-sensitive message so sending later does me no good. But it explains why you finally receive the cancellation days later. I apologize for the annoyance and I’m working on a solution.)

I hope everyone has a very happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday! Stuff(ing) in the newsletter this week:

  • Thanksgiving – Thank You GVWC Members!
  • Maintaining Good Mental Health
  • 10 Top Superfoods of the Year
  • RSVP by December 3 – GVWC Holiday Party on December 16, Plus After Party!

Thanksgiving – Thank You GVWC Members!

During this week of Thanksgiving, I want to thank all of our GVWC members for making this such a terrific walking club.  You all are so supportive of the Club at our community events, supportive of each other during the good times, and particularly supportive when Club members face tough times. I am very grateful to have you all in my life.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the year, the GVWC will donate $1 for every community volunteer hour we contribute as a Club this year, up to $200. Three times this year, the Club served the Tuesday Night Community Meal at the Reeb Avenue Center’s South Side Roots Café.  As you know, the Reeb Avenue Center serves our South Side Community, and the Tuesday Night Community Meal is available to anyone in the area who could benefit from a (fantastic!) hot meal at no charge. Because of the generous donation of your time this year, we will donate the full $200 to the MidOhio Food Bank—which provides the food and the awesome chefs. Thank you all so much. You guys are the best!

Maintaining Good Mental Health

It’s official! The holiday seasons kicks off this week. Even though it’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, there is a lot of pressure to make it the most wonderful time. There is stress to find that perfect gift, while not spending more than we can afford. There’s pressure to make sure everyone in the family has a great time, and guilt about eating or drinking too much when things get out of hand. And during this season that capitalizes on nostalgia, it’s easy to experience sadness that beloved friends and family members are no longer with us. Toss in shorter days and colder temperatures which makes keeping an exercise routine a challenge. It can be a recipe for a big letdown or even worse.

But there are ways to help you get through the holiday season with minimal stress and lots of good cheer. First this article from the MindBodyGreen blog has two suggestions for improving your mental health through exercise. The good news? As a member of the GVWC, we provide both suggestions for you:  1. Getting Outside and 2 Grabbing a Friend. I know both those work for me. Breathing fresh air while walking is the best for my mental health. And exercising with friends makes it…enjoyable!

This fun article from the NBC News BETTER Newsletter suggests we can learn from our dogs about stress management. Lessons from Fido: Live in the moment. Let things go. And find the joy. Good tips from our canine friends.

Finally, here are the 5 best exercises for relieving stress and anxiety from the MindBodyGreen blog. I know many of you do other forms of exercise and cross-training. Even though I advocate doing more than just walking, I should take heed and maybe try out a couple of the suggestions. Yoga, I think, may be the exercise I try next, though I am sure belly dancing don’t look good on me.

10 Top SuperFoods of the Year

I always like to compare my eating habits with articles I read that have the top foods or superfoods that everyone should be eating. Usually, I’m regularly eating 8 of 10 foods on various lists. Unfortunately, on this list of Top 10 Superfoods of 2017 from the VeryWell blog, I failed miserably. I think I only eat two. Actually, I have never even heard of the other 8! I hope you all are doing better than me. I need a food lesson. And quick!

RSVP by December 3 – GVWC Holiday Party on December 1, Plus After Party!

Get it on your calendar. Our annual holiday celebration for GVWC members—and plus 1—will be 6:15pm on Saturday, December 16 at Second Sole’s Short North store. As in the past, there will be appetizers, raffles, and 30% discounts off all Second Sole clothing and shoes. It’s possible that the tacky Christmas suit will make an appearance again this year. Look for more information, but please RSVP to me by December 3.

There will be a follow on party at Sheryl Smith’s which is right around the corner from Second Sole, 682 N. Pearl St, Apt 4.  Please RSVP to Sheryl via email.  More food and desserts!

P.S. If you’re not yet a member, this is a good time to make it official so you can take advantage of this terrific member benefit. Check out more benefits at the GVWC website.

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 14, 2017

Greetings!

Thanks to Frank Stoy for leading the GVWC last Saturday while I was in Wisconsin. It’s a short newsletter this week. Here’s what’s in it:

  • Tight Hips? We Got The Moves
  • Racing News
  • RSVP by December 3 – GVWC Holiday Party on December 16

Tight Hips?  We Got The Moves

After walking the Madison Half Marathon on Saturday, my sore hips reminded me that I need to pay more attention to them during the training season to help with speed—and to assist with post-race recovery. As Andrea can attest, I am not the most flexible person, so I need to be very intentional about stretching. (I think she means unreasonable rather than inflexible, but that’s a story for another day.) My hips are a problem area for me. This article from the MindBodyGreen blog showcases five exercises for better hip flexibility. I will add this to my routine over the winter so I can come back full strength for the spring racing season. After all, my pride is on the line: I need to get back to LarryWalksFAST!

Racing News

As I mentioned, I was in Wisconsin over the weekend to complete the Madison half marathon. Congratulations to Emily Smith, who PR’ed even though the course was 13.3 miles—0.2 miles longer than the 13.1 official distance of a half marathon. What’s an extra two-tenths among friends? Also, with this event, Andrea finished her 15th race on her quest to complete a full or half marathon in all 50 states. Lots of states to go, but keeps us moving. Below is a photo of us before the race began in front of Wisconsin’s beautiful Capitol building.

Christie Angel Hired as New CEO and President of Columbus YWCA

We could not be prouder of GVWC member, Christie Angel. Last Wednesday, Christie was introduced at the YWCA’s annual Woman to Woman luncheon as the 131-year-old organization’s newest President and CEO. The YWCA press release of her hiring lists Christie’s impressive credentials. Congratulations, Christie, on this well-deserved promotion!

Caution – Four Workouts You Should Not Be Doing

Looking for the latest fitness craze?  Here are some words of caution from two fitness experts in a Men’s Health Magazine article,. They warn that some programs are not only ineffective, but can be dangerous. For instance, doing 1,000 crunches will give you nothing more than a sore back. And, because it throws off your balance, using light weights during cardio can be dangerous and potentially cause injury. The experts caution that it’s not just the “red zone” that you should be concerned about, but even working out in the “orange zone” can be dangerous if your heart rate monitor is not calibrated properly. What say you, Orange Theory fans?

Save The Date – December 16 – GVWC Holiday Party

Get it on your calendar. Our annual holiday celebration for GVWC members will be 6:15pm on Saturday, December 16 at Second Sole’s Short North store. As in the past, there will be appetizers, raffles, and 30% discounts off all Second Sole clothing and shoes. It’s possible that the tacky Christmas suit will make an appearance again this year. Look for more information about this and dinner following the happy hour.
