  • Buzz Kill
  • Special Edition T-shirts Still for Sale

Sleep or Exercise?

We have all probably been down that road. We are really tired–maybe a little sleep-deprived–and face the decision of whether to exercise or get a little more sleep. Believe it or not, I confidently and without guilt choose sleep. That’s because experts say sleep is as important to our overall health as exercise is. And getting a good night’s sleep is necessary, particularly on days where we need to be our best and focused. I have built flexibility into my schedule, where I leave Mondays and Fridays open, just in case in need a make-up day, for whatever reason, including sleeping in a little longer on a morning usually reserved for working out. This article from the Verywellfit blog helps you make that decision, and offers suggestions on how to make your sleep routine even stronger.

More Tips for Stress Relief and Finding Balance in Your Life

Last week, we had an article with tips for busy people to reduce stress. Here is another article from the verywellmind blog with tips to help reduce stress and bring your life more into balance. Don’t forget, do more fun things!

Buzz Kill

Until now, the conventional thinking has been that one to two drinks per day is ok, healthy even. We were advised that moderation is the key. Well, here is some sobering news from an article found in The Guardian website. According to a major study, there is no healthy consumption level of alcohol. It is an interesting perspective, along with the interesting fact that 97.1% of Denmark men drink alcohol. I thought everyone was happy in Denmark; maybe that is the reason!

Special Edition T-shirts Still for Sale

Our special edition GVWC t-shirts are still for sale at Columbus Running Company in the Short North, and at the CRC on-line store.  The shirts have pictures of scenes from our Saturday morning walks in a cool abstract format. Men’s shirts are crew neck and women’s are V-neck. Though intended for casual wear, they are made of technical fabric making them good for exercise, too. All the profits for the $40 shirts go to the Club for programming. Here are the shirts displayed on the mannequins.

  • Defend Your Friend 5K race at the Scioto Audubon Park 9am, Saturday, October 6. It benefits Columbus Humane’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Program. It is a good way to get in some extra miles after our regular walk that Saturday, and also support a good cause. GVWC member, Alisa Argust, has been a longtime volunteer at Columbus Humane.
  • Congratulations to the GVWC’s Vicky Brunetto on her participation in the John Glenn International Runway 5K race. Here is Vicky taxiing after the race.

GVWC Weekly Newsletter |Early Edition | September 18, 2018

Greetings!

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and a great crowd turned out to walk this past weekend.  The breakfast at Valter’s afterwards was tasty as always. I think fall is right around the corner. It is a great time of year to walk with the GVWC.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Reeb Avenue Center Tuesday Night Dinner – Need 4 More Volunteers
  • Turn Off Your TV – Improve Your Life
  • More Tips for Busy People
  • Core Is Important

The photo below shows the gathering group before our walk Saturday.

Reeb Avenue Community Tuesday Night Dinner on September 25 – Need Four More!

One of the best things about the GVWC is that we both create community and give back to the community. As we have for the last couple years, the Club serves the Tuesday Night Community Meal at the Reeb Avenue Center once every quarter. The Center is a wonderful resource for our South Side neighbors, regardless of age or life situation. Reeb houses many important social service agencies, including the Godman Guild, South Side Boys and Girls Club, the Ohio Benefit Bank, and Community Development for All People. In addition, residents can access healthy, whole foods from the South Side Roots Café, Market, & Kitchen, which also serves a free, hot meal to all comers every Tuesday night. That’s where the GVWC comes in.

We need  4 more volunteers to staff the dinner. Jobs include greeting guests, serving food, maintaining the dining, and working in the kitchen. We meet at the Center at 4:30pm and are finished around 7 or 7:30pm. No previous experience necessary! If you can join us on September 25, email Chris Tayman. Below is a photo of GVWC volunteers during one of our recent forays.

Turn Off The TV – Improve Your Life

Want to gain better control of your life? Looking for ways to improve your daily time management? Turn off the TV! According to this article from the VeryWellmind blog, there are a number of benefits to watching less TV. It’s an impressive, if disturbing, list (for an avid TV-watcher like myself). Thanks, Jim McVay, with submitting the article.

More Tips for Busy People

As a follow up to turning off the TV, here is another one from the VeryWellmind blog which presents seven ways busy people can reduce stress in our lives. We should build in small breaks in our day to meditate, exercise and relax. And my personal favorite is #3. We all could use a little stress relief at times in our lives.

Core Is Important

We often talk about strength and body weight exercises, like planks, push-ups, and mountain climbers. These types of exercises help improve our core muscles. Many other forms of exercises do that as well, like yoga and Pilates. As we age, strong core muscles become increasingly important, so that we can be assured we will be able to complete even the most basic daily functions that we don’t think too much about today. The Harvard Health Publishing blog explains the importance of maintaining a strong core (which, by the way, is not just the “six pack” muscles).

Breakfast at Valters This Saturday – September 15

Let’s meet at Valters for breakfast after our walk this Saturday between 9:15am and 9:30am.  So I can let them know how many to expect, email me with your RSVP by Thursday. Valter is an amazing chef and cooks up the best skillet dishes and pancakes. Valters is a partner with the GVWC. We love to go to his restaurant as a Club at least once a quarter.

Your Brain on Walking

Studies have shown that aerobic exercise can improve short- and long-term memory and may also help reduce the risk of dementia. This article from Runners World Magazine has information about the results of such studies.

Sharpening Your Brain

Check out this article from the VeryWellmind blog that shares five exercises to train your brain to be sharper. (One of them, as discussed in the earlier article, is regular exercise.) Other exercises for the brain include learning something new, using your non-dominant hand (yikes!), meditating, and socializing. The GVWC covers everyone on at least two of these recommendations – exercising and socializing!

Five Things to Make You Happier (No guarantees)

Just in case you are looking to be a little happier, this article from VeryWellhealthymind blog with five ways to help you make you more positive and improve your outlook on life. While most of us recognize these suggestions and have found them to work, this article serves as a reminder to be more intentional about putting them into practice can’t hurt. For some reason, this happiness stuff reminded me of a song I used to sing with my kids. (Earworm warning!)

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | September 4, 2018

Greetings!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Labor Day weekend. While it’s the official end of summer, it sure doesn’t feel like it. Looking forward to seeing you all again this Saturday.

  • Reeb Avenue Center Tuesday Night Dinner – Volunteers Needed for Sept 25
  • Three Basic Exercises of a Solid Exercise Regimen
  • Keeping Your Joints Healthy

Three Basic Components of Solid Exercise Regimen

One of the core tenets of the GVWC is to get people moving more. On Saturday mornings, this primarily involves moving our bodies by walking, which improves our aerobic fitness. Afterwards, of course, we spend a lot of time at Winans moving our mouths, which helps us emotionally and psychologically. Haha! According to this article, 3 Types of Exercise You Need to Lose Weight, the best fitness programs contain these three types of exercises: aerobic to lose weight, strength to build muscle, and flexibility to reduce stress and stay healthy. The last two are especially important as we age.

Keeping Your Joints Healthy

We all have had them, achy or creaking knees, shoulders, hips. Sore joints could be the result of arthritis, and injury or age. Whatever the cause, it is important to keep our joints as free ranging and healthy as possible. For many, the initial reaction may be to move less when things like this occur, but the science tells us these days quite the opposite. Keep moving! Of course check with your doctor first, but here are 9 ways to keep your joints healthy. Guess what? It gets back to the article discussed above: building a fitness regimen that balances moving, strength, and flexibility. Let us all work to keep moving healthfully for as long as we can!

GVWC Members and Partners – Footprints and Footnotes

  • Congratulations to Drew Smith and Kelsey VanDemark who were married last Saturday! It was an incredible event, and I wish my son and new daughter-in-law a long life of good health and happiness!
