GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 27, 2018

Greetings!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. A lot is going on between now and the end of the year.  I hope we can share some of the holiday season together. It is the first Saturday of the month this week and, as you know, that’s when we do the Winans to Winans route.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Village Lights – Next Sunday – December 2
  • Shorter Workouts
  • Creating Healthier Food Culture at Work
  • Hitting and Maintaining Your Happy Weight
  • Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store – December 8
  • GVWC Holiday Party – December 16
  • GVWC 2019 Annual Memberships Dues Renewal
  • GVWC Members and Partners – Footprints and Footnotes
  • Gift Ideas from Winans

Village Lights – Next Sunday – December 2

Village Lights, the German Village Society’s annual holiday season kickoff, takes place this year on Sunday, December 2 from 5pm – 9pm. To promote the Club, the GVWC will have a booth on the StrietzelMarkt on the Platz (outside the German Village Meeting Haus at 588 S. 3rd St.). We’re looking for volunteers to be in the booth for one-hour shifts (2 people per shift) from 7pm – 8pm and 8pm – 9pm. If you can help, add your name and select a shift. We’ll give you instructions, so you’ll know everything you need to know. Many thanks!

Shorter Workouts

Short on time?  Here are eight mini-workouts from the Verywellfit blog that you can fit into your busy holiday season. These are workouts that work the entire body, and are very effective.

Creating Healthier Food Culture at Work

There are lots of food distractions at work, particularly this time of year. A vending machine stocked with cookies and candy beckons me, co-workers coax me out to lunch, and people bring in homemade goodies. Oh, the humanity! But it doesn’t have to be this way. Or at least it can be healthier. Check out these four ways to create a healthier food culture at work from our friends at the Wellness Collective. At my company, The Mannik Smith Group, we have a wellness program that promotes all kind of wellness ideas. You can accumulate points for each of your healthy habits, and those points translate directly into lower health insurance premiums for employees.

Hitting and Maintaining Your Happy Weight

This article from the mgbHealth blog may help you find another approach to achieving a weight you are most happy with. It has a lot to do with training your mind to visualize and see food and hunger from a different angle. Interesting stuff.

Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store – December 8

As we’ve done in years past, the GVWC will collect winter clothing to benefit our friends at the United Methodist Free Store operated by the Church for All People. While the goal is for each of our members to bring one article of new or gently used winter clothing, the free store is pleased to take as many items as you have to donate. (Unfortunately, there are many people in our southside neighborhood who can use something warm.) On the morning of the 8th, prior to gathering at the Schiller statue to start your walk, drop off your items off at the silver Hyundai Tuscan parked at the head of the park (by Stewart School). Many thanks for your generosity!

GVWC Holiday Party – December 16

Leave your walking shoes at home. For this event, you’ll want to put on your party shoes for GVWC’s Annual Member Holiday Party! This year, we’ll be at Local Matters for a cooking demonstration and food sample on the theme of Healthful Celebrations – perfect timing as we head in to the holiday season. We’ll also have snacks and beverages (beer, wine, soft drinks) and raffle items from some of our partners. Afterward, we’ll head over for dinner at The Crest Gastropub on Parsons, conveniently located in the same parking lot as Local Matters.

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 20, 2018

Greetings!

We are closing in on the holiday season starting with Thanksgiving this Thursday. There is a lot going on over the next few weeks at the GVWC. Check it all out in the newsletter. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Balance – Make It A Priority
  • Safflower Oil
  • Mental Toughness
  • Village Lights – December 2
  • Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store – December 8
  • GVWC Holiday Party – December 16
  • GVWC Members and Partners – Footprints and Footnotes

Balance – Make It A Priority

Having good balance is a key ingredient for your long-term health and welfare. As this article from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center blog states, “people that consistently train [for] balance and resistance train can prevent age-related changes from occurring, stay independent and decrease risks of falling.” The article presents five simple exercises to improve your balance. You can even improve your balance by standing on one foot then switching to the other while doing things like brushing your teeth or standing in line at the grocery store.

Safflower Oil

Have you used safflower oil in your cooking? It’s a good choice because it’s heart healthy. The American Heart Association urges us to Use Olive, Canola, Corn or Safflower Oil as Your Main Kitchen Fats. As a reminder, saturated fat and trans fat are bad because they raise the “bad” LDL cholesterol in your blood. To keep arteries healthy, use liquid fats (oils). The best ones are olive, canola, corn and safflower oils, because they contain the least saturated fat. This article from the Very Wellfit blog with more information about safflower oil.

Mental Toughness

Mental toughness is often associated with athletes. More often than not, though, mental toughness, determination, grit (my favorite term!) is required and exhibited by regular people in our everyday lives. This article from the VeryWellmind blog offers ways to improve your mental toughness. I am sure you all have found yourselves in situations where you had to tough it out—particularly when you may have originally thought there was no way.

Village Lights –December 2

Village Lights, the German Village Society’s annual season kickoff, is taking place this year on Sunday, December 2 from 5pm – 9pm. The GVWC will have a booth on the StrietzelMarkt on the Platz (outside the German Village Meeting Haus at 588 S. 3rd St.) to promote the Club. We’ll give you instructions, so you’ll know everything you need to know. Many thanks!

  • It was festive race for the Holiday in Lights 5K race in Cincinnati last Saturday.  Below is a picture of the lovely GVWC ladies participating at the event, and at Parker’s Tavern for post-race imbibing: Karen Edwards, Catherine Nocar, Darla Kaikis, Deb Hudson, Chris Tayman, Karin Beaulieu, Priscilla Knaus, and Vicky Brunetto. (no wonder we only had a medium crowd Saturday morning).  Here is Darla’s account of the experience:

Eight deLightful [see what she did there?] walkers decided it was time for a road trip race. We set our sights on the Holiday in Lights 5k in the Cincinnati area. I speak for the group when I say we highly recommend this event for the fun of it. It is a family and pet friendly event on a paved trail in Sharon Woods Park. The hilly timed race starts at 5:00 pm so by the end you are suddenly walking in a winter wonderland of light displays along the course. Wear your most festive race wear as there is even a costume contest. Race swag is a festive long-sleeved cotton tee and silver ornament with packet pick up at Fleet Feet (with a 20% discount for shopping) or at the event on race day. There is a ton of food at the end including Skyline Chili, LaRosa’s Pizza, City Barbecue, Bruegger’s Bagels and more. For more information see www.holidayinlights.com

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 13, 2018

Greetings!

Winter has come a little early, don’t you agree?  We still had a good hardy crowd on Saturday.  Thanks, Otto, for taking the lead while I was out of town for work.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Sit Less to Improve Your Health
  • Body Weight Exercises
  • Reverse Aging? Bergamot Oil May Help
  • Village Lights – December 2
  • Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store – December 8
  • GVWC Holiday Party – December 16
  • GVWC Members and Partners – Footprints and Footnotes

Sit Less to Improve Your Health

They say sitting is the new smoking.  Some of the studies are scary, concluding that sitting all day can counteract most of the benefits of exercising.  Yikes!  Here is an article from the Sharecare blog with information that may incentivize you to at least take standing/moving breaks every 30 to 60 minutes each day.  Thanks for the contribution, Jim McVay!

Body Weight Exercises

As the season turns cold and dark, we spend more time inside. Getting out for exercise is a little more difficult.  No problem, here is an article from VeryWellfit blog with 19 body weight exercises you can do anywhere, any time, take up very little space, and most of the exercises don’t required equipment.  This may help keep your fitness going through the tough part of the year by building strength, balance, and maintaining endurance.

Reverse Aging?  Bergamot Oil May Help

If you are looking for natural alternatives for healing and wellness, check out this article from the mgbfood blog.  Bergamot oil has shown to have positive impacts for depression, anxiety, and even reduce the aging process.  If anybody has any experience with bergamot oil, please let me know.  I am curious!

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | November 6, 2018

Greetings!

Back to dark! But a great way to keep your spirits up is to keep walking (research proves this!) and hanging with great friends. We go year-round, so don’t go thinking it’s time to hibernate till spring. To keep you motivated, we’ve got some cool stuff upcoming in the next few months. Keep reading the weekly newsletters and checking us out on Facebook.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Finding the Light
  • Keeping Your Wheels Healthy
  • Benefits of Walking
  • Does Osteoarthritis Keep You from Moving? Then Keep Moving!
  • Village Lights – December 2
  • Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store – December 8
  • GVWC Holiday Party – December 16
  • Special Edition T-shirts Still for Sale

Finding The Light

Along with many other Jews this past weekend across the nation and around the world, Andrea and I went to Shabbat morning services at our synagogue to honor the deaths of the 11 murdered members of the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, and to show our resolve.  Our synagogue was packed.  Services at our shul on a Shabbat morning go from 9am to about noon, and people show up to pray sometime during that 3-hour period.  So, the sanctuary is continually filling up. Andrea and I were sitting in the front, so we did not notice the increasing crowd. But, toward the end of the service, I looked back at the congregation, and there among the members of our shul were so many of our Muslim brethren praying right alongside of us.  It took my breath away.  It was one of the most moving sights I have seen in a very long time. After the service, during our traditional Kiddush lunch, I had a chance to welcome many of our new friends and thank them for their support.  The typical response – of course we are here for you.  It was an amazing morning at such a dark time.  But there is so much hope.  If we all just work to be a little kinder, extend an open hand, maybe do one more small act of kindness during our day, we will help create a more peaceful and welcoming world.  May the memories of the 11 Tree of Life worshippers always be for a blessing.

Keeping Your Wheels Heathy

You don’t realize how much you rely on your feet until you have a problem. And if you walk or run for fitness, it is critical to have healthy feet. If you deal with foot pain or an issue like plantar fasciitis, you’ll be interested in these four important foot stretches, from the Greatest blog, that may solve your problem. Thanks, Otto, for keeping us on our toes—and for the contribution!

Benefits of Walking

I know. All y’all know this. You live it. But if you need a little reinforcement—or want to feel really good about what you are doing for your body—check out the 7 Incredible Health Benefits of Walking 30 Minutes a Day from Prevention Magazine. Until they come up with a way to get all these benefits by just popping a pill. Until then, keep on walking!

Does Osteoarthritis Keep You from Moving? Then Keep Moving!

It is counterintuitive, when arthritis makes it hard to move, but the best way to combat osteoarthritis is to … keep moving. As this article from Harvard Health states, Many avoid activity because of knee pain, but movement is exactly what is needed. It has worked for me. I have osteoarthritis in my hips and spine, which I manage to keep at bay through regular exercise. For me, walking and stretching are effective in keeping my joints pain-free and my range of motion reasonably decent (though I’ve never been particularly flexible).

Village Lights –December 2

Our special edition GVWC t-shirts are for sale for $40 at Columbus Running Company in the Short North store and at the CRC on-line store. The shirts portray scenes from our Saturday morning walks in a cool abstract format. Men’s shirts are crew neck and women’s are V-neck. They are spiffy enough for casual wear and, because of technical fabric, they are good for exercise, too. All the profits go to the Club for programming.
