Santa Had a Rough Night

Have you ever heard Santa complain?  Never.  You’ve never heard Santa complain about how tough his job is, or how much effort it takes to deliver gifts to all the boys and girls around the world.  You never hear that because Santa is a mensch.  But, here is a rare glimpse of Santa on Christmas morning after he delivered all the toys.  Andrea was out on a run, and snapped this picture of Santa, a couple elves and reindeer after coming out of the Franklin County Courthouse and Jail.  Heal up, Santa.  See you next year!

Santa Has Rough Night

How to Get Your Family to Exercise With You

My family is a geeky running (and walking) family. Our family vacations have us traveling across the country—even internationally, on occasion—to do full and half marathons together. Heck, our family’s holiday tradition is to invite people over to run 5 miles. This has not always been the case. Years ago, when my kids were in middle and high school, there was no way they would exercise with their parents. Emily even implored me not to do that “stupid walking thing” where her teenage friends might happen to see me. She would certainly die of embarrassment. How could I be so cruel? Times have changed, though. Both kids now embrace fitness and have their own goals and aspirations, which also include races. And when they’re home, they love to get out for a good run with their parents. Although we never pressured the kids, they found running and exercising for the “health of it” on their own. As I mentioned at the GVWC party, you should never underestimate how much of a role model you can be when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. People pay attention to that. They pay attention to you. It is really cool when it happens within your own family.

This article from the mgbmovement blog presents tips on getting your family to exercise with you. Sometimes, just sometimes, setting a good example may get your family’s attention to get out and sweat with you. Of course, it could take about 10 years. Just be patient.

GVWC Annual Membership Dues Renewal

Your $15 annual membership fee for 2019 is due. If you joined the Club after September 30 this year, you do not need to pay the membership renewal for this year. Mail checks made out to “German Village Walking Club” to 41 W. Frankfort Street, Columbus, Ohio 43206. Thank you for your support. You all make the Club a great success!

GVWC Members and Partners – Footprints and Footnotes

  • Congratulations to Jim McVay on his second place finish for his age group at the Columbus Half Marathon in October. Below is Jim’s plaque. Way to be, Jim! How appropriate it is that the title of the plaque is “Limitless”.

  • Catherine Nocar tossed a little warmer to us this week as she is down in Florida for the holidays, sporting those ugly Christmas sweater running shoes she purchased at CRC.  Bring back some good weather, Catherine!

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | December 18, 2018

Greetings!

Saturdays in December are tough. It’s tough to get out there to walk when it’s a damp and overcast 40 degrees. I get it. Staying snuggled up in bed with the dog (or the cat or the spouse, whomever) seems infinitely more appealing than lacing up the shoes, zipping up the jacket, and hitting the bricks. I promise you, though, you will feel so much better for having gotten out, having breathed fresh air, and having accomplished something remarkable … like walking 3 miles on a damp and overcast 40-degree day. Hey, this isn’t just my opinion. Ask the dozen or so of your walking peers who came out last week. It’s worth it!

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • A Fun and Joy-Filled GVWC Annual Member Holiday Party
  • THIS SATURDAY – Brrrrewery District 5K/5-Miler – No Official GVWC Walk
  • GVWC 2019 Annual Memberships Dues Renewal
  • Mistakes After Exercising
  • Make Your Walking More Effective – Mix It Up
  • Nationwide Arena 3rd Worst Among NHL Arenas for Food-Safety Violations

A Fun and Joy-Filled GVWC Annual Member Holiday Party

A great time was had by all at the GVWC Holiday Party on Sunday at Local Matters. Mary and Monique were wonderful and welcoming hosts as they talked about the great work of the organization in our community. Local Matters is dedicated to educating people about how to cook healthy foods at an economical price for families across Columbus. Thank you to Otto for your leadership in organizing this great event. And thank you to all our GVWC partners listed at the bottom of the newsletter. Check them out!

I want to express my gratitude, again, to the Club for the gift and your tremendous support for the GVWC. The Club was founded on the principles of building community and promoting the health benefits of walking. You all are outstanding ambassadors. YOU WALK THE TALK! Thank you for inspiring me and others through your personal actions and commitment to good health.

Here are some scenes from the event:

THIS SATURDAY – Brrrrewery District 5K/5-Miler – No Official GVWC Walk

There is no official GVWC Walk on Saturday (December 22). Instead, you are welcome to join my family and me for our 5th Annual Brrrrewery District 5-Miler + Schmooze. We will have an easy 5K or 5-mile jaunt through the Scioto-Audubon Park, North Bank Park, Broad and Main St. Bridges, and then back to the Brewery District. Afterwards, refreshments will be served at our home. Be aware this is a “mixed” group – walkers and runners – but I’m confident we can all get along in the spirit of the holidays! Here are the particulars:

DATE: Saturday, December 22

TIME: Arrive by 8:20am. Run/Walk starts at 8:30am.

LOCATION: 41 W. Frankfort St., Columbus
RSVP: by Thursday, December 20 to germanvillagewalkingclub@gmail.com

GVWC Annual Membership Dues Renewal

Your $15 annual membership fee for 2019 is due by December 31. If you joined the Club after September 30 this year, you do not need to pay the membership renewal for this year. Mail checks made out to “German Village Walking Club” to 41 W. Frankfort Street, Columbus, Ohio 43206. Thank you for your support. You all make the Club a great success!

Mistakes After Exercising

How can you make a mistake after you just finished doing something good for your body? Well, maybe it is not a big mistake, but here are six things to consider from an article in the VeryWellfit blog to help maximize the time and effort spent on to improve your health.

Make Your Walking More Effective – Mix It Up

We know walking is good for us. You do it. But do you mix it up? For the most effective way to get in shape and lose weight you need to mix it up – different paces, durations, hills, intensity. Variety is not only the spice of life, it can help extend the quality of your life. Check out this short article from POPSUGAR blog. Thanks, Dr. Steph, for the contribution!

Nationwide Arena 3rd Worst Among NHL Arenas for Food-Safety Violations

I don’t know if you heard this story, which was recently reported in the Columbus Dispatch, but you might want to reconsider what you purchase at the concession counters at Nationwide Arena. “Unsafe temperatures, rodent droppings, unsanitary conditions and lack of cleanliness were some of the key findings of food-safety inspections of Nationwide Arena in 2016 and 2017, according to the documents ESPN obtained.” Yuck! According to Xen Riggs, chief operating officer of Nationwide Arena, arena officials were already aware of the data ESPN used in its report and have addressed many of the issues. So, there’s that…

GVWC Weekly Newsletter – Early Edition | December 10, 2018

Greetings!

Though it was a cooooold walk on Saturday through the Scioto Audubon and along the Scioto Mile, it warmed my heart to see all the donations of new and gently used items of winter clothing to benefit the nearby For All People Free Store.

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

  • Winter Clothing Drive a Success!
  • THIS SUNDAY! GVWC’s Holiday Party – December 16 (RSVP by 12/11)
  • GVWC 2019 Annual Memberships Dues Renewal
  • Alzheimer’s Disease – We May Have Some Control
  • We know about the Yellow Stuff
  • Wellness Trends for 2019
  • Exercise Wins: Fit Seniors Can Have Hearts That Look 30 Years Younger
  • Gift Ideas from Winans

Winter Clothing Drive a Success!

Thanks to everyone who donated winter articles of clothing, and much more, to the United Methodist Free Store operated by the Church for All People. Atticus Garden, Program Director at the Church and Community Development for All People (and accompanied by his two dogs Rogue and Ghost), gave a wonderful overview of all the great stuff going on at the Church for All People. Atticus was telling about their initiative to provide mats and sleeping bags to people in need this winter. We will have more information to come about that program. Here is the group, including Atticus and his dogs, and the generous donations packed in the vehicle for drop-off by Andrea.

We’ll be at Local Matters this year for a cooking demonstration and food sample on the theme of Healthful Celebrations – perfect timing as we head in to the holiday season. We’ll also have snacks and beverages (beer, wine, and water) and raffle items from some of our partners. Afterward, we’ll head over for dinner at The Crest Gastropub on Parsons, conveniently located in the same parking lot as Local Matters.

Space is limited at Local Matters. Registration is required and is first come, first served. Early registration is your best bet. All are welcome to join us at The Crest–regardless of whether you attend the event at Local Matters. So we can provide the restaurant a head count, you should RSVP (same as link above) if you plan to go to The Crest.

Alzheimer’s Disease – We May Have Some Control

You may have control in lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s disease according to this brain doctor as written in the Yahoo Lifestyle blog. Eating few carbohydrates and more good fats, as well as getting daily exercise are keys. Thanks, Maureen Redovan, for the contribution!

We know about the Yellow Stuff

Here’s something that might take us back to our childhood playing in the snow. We learned early on that we shouldn’t eat yellow snow, right? But, how about those tempting floating flakes in the air? After reading this article from the OSU Wexner Medical Center blog, I am not inclined to partake.

Wellness Trends for 2019

This article from the mgb blog presents a peek into the new wellness trends for 2019. It is an interesting read. I like the trends of rest, recovery, and wine. Sounds like a perfect weekend—especially if it helps you get and stay healthy. Ok, there may be a little bit more involved but, a guy can dream, can’t he? Thanks, Steph Waterman, for the contribution!

Exercise Wins: Fit Seniors Can Have Hearts That Look 30 Years Younger

“We know we need to exercise for our health, but a lifelong exercise habit may also help us feel younger and stay stronger well into our senior years. In fact, people in their 70s who have been exercising regularly for decades seem to have put a brake on the aging process, maintaining the heart, lung and muscle fitness of healthy people at least 30 years younger.” So begins the story (read or listen here) from NPR’s Morning Edition about why a lifelong commitment to fitness pays off in the end.

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | December 4, 2018

Greetings!

Yuck! It was the second Saturday in a row of rain. And this time it was a bone-chilling, virtually soul-sucking rain. But a handful of hearty walkers toughed it out on the Winans to Winans route. Nice work everyone. And, thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Village Lights Sunday night!  It was an unbelievable crowd, and lots of interest in the Club. Thank you, Lynne, Sheryl, Greg and Debbie for helping out at the booth.

Don’t forget the clothing drive for the For All People Free Store this Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you then. And no rain!

This Saturday! Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store

As we’ve done in years past, the GVWC will collect winter clothing to benefit our friends at the United Methodist Free Store operated by the Church for All People. While the goal is for each of our members to bring one article of new or gently used winter clothing, the free store is pleased to take as many items as you have to donate. (Unfortunately, there are many people in our southside neighborhood who can use something warm.) On the morning of the 8th, prior to gathering at the Schiller statue to start your walk, drop off your items off at the silver Hyundai Tuscan parked at the head of the park (by Stewart School). Many thanks for your generosity!

A Good Night’s Sleep

A key ingredient to maintaining good health is getting a good night’s sleep. Indeed, a solid eight hours is proven to offset many physical illnesses, increase brain function and energy, and decrease inflammation and appetite. This is difficult for many people and there are many tips for improving your night’s sleep. This article from the mgbmovement blog offers practical suggestions to help with falling asleep and staying asleep—chief among them is to stay off your devices for at least an hour before bedtime.

Tumeric to Reduce Inflammation?

Tumeric? Maybe. Maybe not. The healing properties of the spice turmeric have long been touted. But the study discussed in an article from the Consumer Reports website says that the data do not show any significant effectiveness in reducing inflammation, which, in the case of the study, was post-surgery inflammation. Maybe it is like chicken soup for colds and illnesses.  It may not help, but it can’t hurt. And, of course, there are many studies documenting the ridiculous power of the placebo effect. Thanks, Steph Waterman, for the contribution!

Mushrooms – Start Eating Different Types

Mushrooms have medicinal properties that have been used for thousands of years. This interesting article from the mgbfood blog details the healthy effects of different types of mushrooms. I am going to try out the cordyceps variety, which is believed to act as the fountain of youth. Now if I can just find a mushroom that will help me with my 15-foot jump shot, I will be happy.
