Popular Health Trends in 2020

Yep, if you have seen that “controversial” Peloton TV commercial, home gyms and workouts are predicted to be big in 2020. Plant-based meals are included in the list for 2020, as is video conferencing with your medical professional. You can find details of the list in the Western Pennsylvania Healthcare News blog article.

Calling All Dog Lovers! Study Suggests Fido May Help You Live Longer

You’re probably aware that owning a pet has health benefits. But a new study suggests that owning a dog can help keep your heart healthier and you living longer. But it isn’t just dogs. Cats also help lower the risk of dying from a heart attack by 30 percent and by stroke by 33 percent, according to a study conducted by the University of Minnesota Stroke Research Center. Cats’ purrs have calming, healing qualities that help reduce stress and blood pressure, as well as facilitate bone density and healing.

Dave McGovern RaceWalking Clinic – North Canton, Ohio – January 10-12, 2020

I have had excellent race walking instructions from Dave McGovern, as well as a fun time at a couple of Dave’s race walking clinics (early in my race walking career). Dave has helped thousands of walkers of all abilities to walk faster with fewer injuries. There’s no better way to improve your racewalking or marathon walking. ALL abilities are encouraged to attend. Dave has the unique ability to put beginning walkers at ease while getting them up to speed, and at the same time challenging more advanced racewalkers to excel.

During his 35-year competitive career Dave has won 15 U.S. National Championships. A member of 20 International Teams, including seven World Cup and six Pan Am Cup teams, Dave is the only track and field athlete in US history to qualify for eight consecutive Olympic Trials! Still competing at a high level at the age of 53, Dave won the 2016 USA Track and Field 10-Kilometer Championship.

The clinic is held at the Sport Dome indoor facility, 5617 Portage St NW, North Canton, Ohio 44720 during the weekend January 10 – 12, 2020.  The cost is $195.  You can sign up and find more details here.

GVWC Weekly Newsletter | Christmas Eve 2019 Edition

Greetings!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!  I hope everyone has a very happy and safe holiday season. In the newsletter this week:

  • Getting Rid of a Cold Overnight
  • Symptoms of a Blood Clot
  • Most Americans Say the Eat Healthy. The Data Say They Don’t.
  • 2020 GVWC Membership Dues Renewal
  • January 18 – Walk Night with the Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Dave McGovern RaceWalking Clinic – North Canton, Ohio – January 10-12, 2020

Getting Rid of a Cold Overnight

Tis the season – for colds and flu. Here is an interesting article from the Byrdie blog with eight ways to get rid of a cold overnight. Some, like eating chicken soup, are tried and true. But others are a little less conventional, like wearing wet socks! Don’t believe me? Go to the link.

Symptoms of a Blood Clot

Blood clots can have serious health consequences. Although some clots do not present symptoms, many clot situations do, and may require immediate attention as discussed in this article from the Verywellhealth blog.

Most Americans Say the Eat Healthy. The Data Say They Don’t.

Yeah, this is a bummer of an article to include smack dab in the middle of the festive Holiday season. Seventy-five percent of Americans believe they eat a healthy diet. Yet obesity rates continue to rise, and studies suggest Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. Now, a new study has found that despite the no-carb craze, Americans are still eating too many low-quality carbs and too much saturated fat. Will somebody please hand me another piece of Christmas Kringle?

  • Tips for Coping with the Holidays

No GVWC Walk This Saturday – Brrrewery District 5M/5K – December 21

There is no official GVWC Walk on Saturday. Instead, you are welcome to join my family and me for our 6th Annual Brrrrewery District 5-Miler/5-K + Schmooze. We will have an easy 5K or 5-mile jaunt through the Scioto-Audubon Park, North Bank Park, Broad and Main St. Bridges, and then back to the Brewery District. Afterwards, brunch will be served at our home. Be aware this is a “mixed” group – walkers and runners – but I’m confident we can all get along in the spirit of the holidays! Here are the particulars:

DATE: Saturday, December 21

TIME: Arrive by 8:20am. Run/Walk starts at 8:30am.

LOCATION: 41 W. Frankfort St., Columbus
RSVP: by Thursday, December 19 to germanvillagewalkingclub@gmail.com

Improving Mental Focus

Sometimes when I’m bored, I mindlessly scroll through Facebook. Other times, after looking something up on the Internet, I end up on a 45-minute trip down a rabbit hole. Our phones are good in that they keep us connected to news and information. But much of the stuff we consume is mostly irrelevant. Our phones are bad in that they keep us constantly distracted. And these distractions interfere with our ability to focus on important tasks. The Verywellmind blog offers 7 useful tips for improving your mental focus. I know I need to work on my focus, being more mindful, and single-tasking (as opposed to multi-tasking).

Tips for Coping with the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! At least that’s what the song says. (Andy Williams’ version is one of my favorites, by the way.) But the holiday can be very stressful. And, they can be emotional—and not in a good way. If any of that resonates with you, you are not alone. The Mayo Clinic offers suggestions on how to manage stress and depression, like being realistic, planning ahead, and seeking support. Stress and depression doesn’t just ruin your holidays, but it can hurt your health.

This Thursday! Winans – Champagne and Chocolate – December 12

It’s here again! This year our holiday Champagne + Chocolate tasting is Thursday, December 12 from 6pm-9pm. Our champagne master will be pouring five of his favorite champagnes paired with our handmade chocolates. Light hors d’oeuvre will also be provided. Enjoy a festive evening out with us and your friends before the hustle and bustle of the holidays set in. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/give-joy-champagne-chocolate-tasting-tickets-77860423623

Destination Races

Congratulations to Karin and her two kids, Caroline and Kevin, who participated the Seattle Half Marathon a couple weeks ago.  Karin said, “we had a great morning for the Seattle half marathon, and this ‘no training’ thing is really working out for me as I was able to complete it in a respectable 3:11, even with all those darn hills!” Way to be Karin, Kevin (it was his first half marathon!), and Caroline!

Congratulations to the Dashing Divas, pictured below (sans Priscilla), Kim, Karen, Catherine, Darla and Vicki. Nicely done, ladies! For those of you who are familiar with Runner’s World Magazine, you may recognize the famous Bart Yasso, aka the Mayor of Running. Mr. Yasso is one of the few people on the planet to have completed races on all seven continents—including the Mt. Kilimanjaro Marathon.

Motivational Podcasts

Looking for a little motivation? Here is an article from the VeryWellMind blog with 20 of the top motivational podcasts from 2019.  We can use some of these to take us into 2020 with a great attitude.

Car-Free Streets Are A Growing Movement

As you probably know from experience, the greatest threat faced by those of us who walk outside is from cars – and trucks and buses and all kinds of vehicular traffic. This article from CityLab, Why the Car-Free Streets Movement Will Continue to Grow, talks about European and American cities that are closing major streets to traffic and opening them up to people. And, yes, when asked what they like most about a city they have visited, almost no one answers: “The cars whizzing by on the streets.”

GVWC Weekly Newsletter |December 3, 2019

Greetings!

I hope your Thanksgiving holiday was enjoyable!  In the newsletter this week:

  • Romance Out of the Rubble – StoryCorps
  • There’s an App for That
  • Want Better Health? Be Nicer.
  • Life Expectancy Study Jolts Assumptions Made About Life In America
  • 2020 GVWC Membership Dues Renewal

What a surprise to have Diedre join us for our walk this past Saturday all the way from Las Vegas. You are looking great, Diedre!  Also, we had some competition for The Game on Saturday. Otto supporting his Alma Mater and Jan (Terri’s sister visiting from DC) representing the Buckeyes! Yes, the game left Otto scratching his head. Again.

Romance Out of the Rubble – StoryCorps

As you may know, two members of the GVWC, Jeff Darbee and Nancy Recchie, are Columbus historians and preservationists. Jeff and Nancy are passionate about their work, which dates back to 1976, and started with their common interest in preserving Columbus’ Union Station. As it turns out, that’s not all there is to their story. StoryCorps was in Columbus recently and captured Jeff and Nancy’s tale of romance. The mission of StoryCorps is to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world”. Listen to Jeff and Nancy’s heart-warming story, “Romance Out of the Ruble.” Congratulations, Nancy and Jeff! You two are awesome!

There’s an App for That

Who doesn’t like a good app? The Menshealth Magazine blog offers their take on the Top 10 Fitness Apps to track your diet, work out, and feel happier overall.

Want Better Health?  Be Nicer.

Kindness may help improve your health. This article from mbghealth references studies that show how positive relationships buffer stress which, in turn, improves immune functioning, lowers blood pressure, improves mood, and speeds recovery after injury. The article offers three ways to practice more kindness in your life. How nice.

Life Expectancy Study Jolts Assumptions Made About Life In America

There was a concerning story on NPR this morning about a Life Expectancy Study Jolts Assumptions Made About Life In America. The research finds that working-age Americans are less likely to live to retirement age than at any time in recent history—which is bad news for me as my retirement is within sight. Worse yet, the Ohio Valley is like ground zero for this phenomenon. “We found, for example, that of all the excess deaths that occur in the United States due to this increase in mortality, one-third of them occurred in four states – Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Indiana. Those four states accounted for one-third of the excess deaths between 2010 and 2017.” Um, yikes!
