Popular Health Trends in 2020
Yep, if you have seen that “controversial” Peloton TV commercial, home gyms and workouts are predicted to be big in 2020. Plant-based meals are included in the list for 2020, as is video conferencing with your medical professional. You can find details of the list in the Western Pennsylvania Healthcare News blog article.
Calling All Dog Lovers! Study Suggests Fido May Help You Live Longer
You’re probably aware that owning a pet has health benefits. But a new study suggests that owning a dog can help keep your heart healthier and you living longer. But it isn’t just dogs. Cats also help lower the risk of dying from a heart attack by 30 percent and by stroke by 33 percent, according to a study conducted by the University of Minnesota Stroke Research Center. Cats’ purrs have calming, healing qualities that help reduce stress and blood pressure, as well as facilitate bone density and healing.
2020 GVWC Membership Dues Renewal
Thanks to everyone who has already renewed their GVWC membership. This is a reminder that membership renewal ($20) is due by January 1. If you joined the Club after September 30, there is no need to pay the renewal. Payment options are easy: you can pay in person (by cash or check); you can mail a check to me at 41 W. Frankfort Street, Columbus, Ohio 43206, or you can use Paypal at the “Contact Us” page of our website.
January 18 – “Walk Night” at the Columbus Blue Jackets
This news is worthy of some serious cannon-firing! The GVWC has partnered with the Columbus Blue Jackets to offer our members and friends a super-cool and unique experience. Join us on Saturday, January 18 for Walk Night at Nationwide Arena. The building will open at 4:45pm for the GVWC (and other walking & hiking clubs) to walk pre-determined routes throughout the Arena—including some with maximum stairs! All walks end at the Great Lakes Brewing Company Pub for a happy hour event just for us. And this transitions right into the game against the New Jersey Devils. As a part of this deal, in addition to special pricing, each ticket comes with a CBJ drawstring bag or a CBJ water bottle. You can find out more information and purchase tickets here. Mrs. WalksFast and I already have our tickets. We hope you’ll join us!
Dave McGovern RaceWalking Clinic – North Canton, Ohio – January 10-12, 2020
I have had excellent race walking instructions from Dave McGovern, as well as a fun time at a couple of Dave’s race walking clinics (early in my race walking career). Dave has helped thousands of walkers of all abilities to walk faster with fewer injuries. There’s no better way to improve your racewalking or marathon walking. ALL abilities are encouraged to attend. Dave has the unique ability to put beginning walkers at ease while getting them up to speed, and at the same time challenging more advanced racewalkers to excel.
During his 35-year competitive career Dave has won 15 U.S. National Championships. A member of 20 International Teams, including seven World Cup and six Pan Am Cup teams, Dave is the only track and field athlete in US history to qualify for eight consecutive Olympic Trials! Still competing at a high level at the age of 53, Dave won the 2016 USA Track and Field 10-Kilometer Championship.
The clinic is held at the Sport Dome indoor facility, 5617 Portage St NW, North Canton, Ohio 44720 during the weekend January 10 – 12, 2020. The cost is $195. You can sign up and find more details here.
