GVWC Weekly Newsletter | December 4, 2018

Greetings!

Yuck! It was the second Saturday in a row of rain. And this time it was a bone-chilling, virtually soul-sucking rain. But a handful of hearty walkers toughed it out on the Winans to Winans route. Nice work everyone. And, thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Village Lights Sunday night!  It was an unbelievable crowd, and lots of interest in the Club. Thank you, Lynne, Sheryl, Greg and Debbie for helping out at the booth.

Don’t forget the clothing drive for the For All People Free Store this Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you then. And no rain!

Here’s what you will find in the newsletter this week:

This Saturday! Winter Clothing Drive to Benefit For All People Free Store

As we’ve done in years past, the GVWC will collect winter clothing to benefit our friends at the United Methodist Free Store operated by the Church for All People. While the goal is for each of our members to bring one article of new or gently used winter clothing, the free store is pleased to take as many items as you have to donate. (Unfortunately, there are many people in our southside neighborhood who can use something warm.) On the morning of the 8th, prior to gathering at the Schiller statue to start your walk, drop off your items off at the silver Hyundai Tuscan parked at the head of the park (by Stewart School). Many thanks for your generosity!

GVWC’s Annual Member Holiday Party – December 16

Leave your walking shoes at home and bust out your party shoes! GVWC’s Annual Member Holiday Party is Sunday, December 16. We’ll be at Local Matters this year for a cooking demonstration and food sample on the theme of Healthful Celebrations – perfect timing as we head in to the holiday season. We’ll also have snacks and beverages (beer, wine, and water) and raffle items from some of our partners. Afterward, we’ll head over for dinner at The Crest Gastropub on Parsons, conveniently located in the same parking lot as Local Matters.

WHAT: GVWC’s Annual Member Holiday Party

WHEN: Sunday, December 16 from 3pm – 5pm

WHERE: Local Matters, 633 Parsons Ave, Columbus, OH 43206

WHO: All GVWC members and one guest

RSVP: Space is limited at Local Matters so registration is REQUIRED by Tuesday 12/11

COST: $5.00/person via Paypal Money Pool (learn more here)

Space is limited at Local Matters. Registration is required and is first come, first served. Early registration is your best bet. All are welcome to join us at The Crest–regardless of whether you attend the event at Local Matters. So we can provide the restaurant a head count, you should RSVP (same as link above) if you plan to go to The Crest.

Each attendee to the event at Local Matters should “chip in” $5.00 (+ $0.45 credit card transaction fee) to offset the cost. Dinner and drinks at The Crest, of course, are at your own expense.

GVWC Annual Membership Dues Renewal

Your $15 annual membership fee for 2019 is due by December 31. If you joined the Club after September 30 this year, you do not need to pay the membership renewal for this year. Mail checks made out to “German Village Walking Club” to 41 W. Frankfort Street, Columbus, Ohio 43206. Thank you for your support. You all make the Club a great success!

A Good Night’s Sleep

A key ingredient to maintaining good health is getting a good night’s sleep. Indeed, a solid eight hours is proven to offset many physical illnesses, increase brain function and energy, and decrease inflammation and appetite. This is difficult for many people and there are many tips for improving your night’s sleep. This article from the mgbmovement blog offers practical suggestions to help with falling asleep and staying asleep—chief among them is to stay off your devices for at least an hour before bedtime.

Tumeric to Reduce Inflammation?

Tumeric? Maybe. Maybe not. The healing properties of the spice turmeric have long been touted. But the study discussed in an article from the Consumer Reports website says that the data do not show any significant effectiveness in reducing inflammation, which, in the case of the study, was post-surgery inflammation. Maybe it is like chicken soup for colds and illnesses.  It may not help, but it can’t hurt. And, of course, there are many studies documenting the ridiculous power of the placebo effect. Thanks, Steph Waterman, for the contribution!

Mushrooms – Start Eating Different Types

Mushrooms have medicinal properties that have been used for thousands of years. This interesting article from the mgbfood blog details the healthy effects of different types of mushrooms. I am going to try out the cordyceps variety, which is believed to act as the fountain of youth. Now if I can just find a mushroom that will help me with my 15-foot jump shot, I will be happy.
